Autumn at Mt. Rainier

I spent the day at Mt. Rainier and took a few pictures while I was there. The colors are spectacular and in the afternoon the snow started falling. Take note of the water in the Snow Lake picture. The lake was covered with a thin sheet of ice.

Arlington Fly-In

I attended this year’s Fly-in at Arlington Municipal Airport in, you guessed it, Arlington Washington. My family and I spent the day here enjoying the airshow and the exhibits. My wife decided she wants to try flying an ultralight and both of my boys pretty much wanted everything there.

Weekend Adventure– Westport, WA

Once again I took my family to Westport, Washington which is a really fun, small oceanside town with tons of photographic opportunities. We were treated to all kinds of experiences. For photography, I had birds galore, crashing waves, over-excited kids, and a sunset. The family adventure consisted of hiking along trails, playing with seashells, letting our almost-three-year-old ride his bike, and sightseeing around the town.

As was expected for this time of year, the wind blew forcefully with a strong chill in the air. Marshall, our three year old, seemed not to notice and spent the day building cities and throwing sand. In fact, he was so exhausted from the day’s events that he only lasted a few minutes in the car before falling asleep for the trip home. As we are fortunate to live fairly close to Westport, I know it won’t be long before we return. I certainly hope you enjoy a sampling of the photos I took while we were there.

A Cormorant Came to Visit

I happened to look out and in our yard was a mysterious dark black object. It quickly became obvious that the dark black object had a yellow beak and green eyes. As I followed the neck down to the body, I saw that the bird was sitting in my yard– much like a hen on a nest. Concerned that it may be damaged, I slowly approached it and stopped about 50 feet away from it. The bird didn’t move but certainly was alert and watching me.

I decided the best course of action was to call our local wildlife refuge to gather their advice. I was given several phone numbers to call and ultimately was routed to the Department of Fish and Game (DFG). The DFG needed more information about the status of the bird. They needed me to get closer to it. I was to report back in as to whether it flew, stayed put, or hopped out of the way. Well wouldn’t you know it, it stood up and stretched its wings, and began to walk a little bit. Watching a Cormorant walk on land is like watching a duck on land. It wobbled back and forth and was quite humorous to watch. As the day progressed the Cormorant continued its walk across my lawn and eventually lit in my pear tree. About an hour or so later it flew across the fence and walked across a field to stand on another fence. As evening replaced afternoon the bird flew away. I hope it visits again soon.
