About Rob

I live in Washington State but grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I was greatly influenced by my Grandmother, whom we lost 10 days shy of her 99th birthday. She made her living as a portrait photographer and retired in the early 80′s after a 40 year career. I learned black and white processing and basic lighting from her.

One of her instructors, Floyd Lee, of Floyd Lee Color Lab in Seattle, was still in the business when I was first learning from my Grandmother. I didn’t study directly under Floyd, but I certainly had some interesting conversations with him. I took a several year hiatus from photography to study music and work in the computer field. I worked as a professional bass player for several years until a car accident ended my career. I was furtunate to work with many talented musicians and played across the U.S. from Alaska to Maine. I even played at Seattle’s premier club, Jazz Alley. Computer-wise, I worked at Microsoft, DEC, the Army Corps of Engineers, and Compaq before leaving the industry completely and opening a welding business, called The Welding Place. Though I love metalworking, I needed to replace music with another creative outlet. I completed the Professional Photography Course from the New York Institute of Photography. I enjoy child portraiture, as did my Grandmother but I find I enjoy nature and wildlife photography even more. I love to hike and bike in the mountains as I search for new areas to photograph. In the winter, I often snowshoe or snowmobile to photographic locations.

Currently I am using Nikon equipment. Specifically, a Nikon D700. Most of my photographs are created using a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 D lens or a Nikkor 300 f/4D lens. Prior to the Nikon camera, I used Canon 35mm digital and film cameras, Minolta 35mm cameras, and for several years I used a 4×5 view camera given to me by my Grandmother. Now that is a camera!

Recently, I started my own product line which can be viewed at www.gimbaltripodhead.com. I designed and manufacture these products at my business in Washington State.

I certainly hope you enjoy my work. Please don’t hesitate to contact me!
