WOW! What a month! My wife is on maternity leave and we spent three weeks in Eastern Washington. As time permitted I was able to snowmobile to some great locations for some amazing photography. I snow shoed when I could and we traveled all over the local area. You’ve seen the moose I spotted. Let me tell you about the rest of the adventure!
Eagle Watch! The Methow Valley is loaded with Eagles. I had my trusty Canon 40D digital camera armed with a Tamron 70-300mm lens. As we were driving we spotted a pair on a rock 50 feet from the car. My wife stopped and I crept out so as not to alarm the birds. I fired off a few shots which you can see below. The first eagle left and the second one took flight. My Canon 40D has a 6.5 frame per second speed (FPS). A faster FPS would have been nice, even so the Tamron 70-300 just isn’t fast enough to keep up. Below are two of of the images. Just not good enough to make the sales side of the business.
For several days we had a beautiful sunsets. I was out chasing a pair of Great Horned Owls on this particular day and low and behold, a purple sky. Once again my Canon 40D came to the rescue. Are you beginning to see that even though I claim to still use film, I use my 40D an awful lot. This time I used my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens. I am very pleased with this lens. It produces very sharp and vivid images.
I’d love to show you the cougar I was tracking, but, as with most cougars, it appeared to be tracking me. I never saw it, but I followed its tracks for awhile. I was surprised to find the tracks led me almost right back to where I started. I looked around but didn’t see anything, though I was a bit more alert now. As I walked down the hill all of a sudden all of the hairs on my neck stood straight up and my neck tingled. I hate to sound like a wilderness photography wimp, but at that moment I decided lunch sounded good and it was time to head home. Heh, I think the cougar was thinking the same thing! Afterall, I was by myself on mountains a long way away from people. My trusty camera bag of film and digital equipment and accessories was no help this time.
On to the next adventure! Up around 3800′ on a mountain side and armed with a bag of gear. I had my Hakuba tripod, Induro DM01 ball head, a Canon Elan 7N film camera and of course, my Canon 40D digital camera. I used the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens for a series of mountain shots. The day had been so foggy I could barely see 50′ in front of me. During my descent, the fog broke and a tiny amount of sunset was beginning to appear. This has been a bad snow year and much of it had already melted. Fortunately, the area is expecting more snow and I hope to be there in time to make a few more photos.
Good post! I’ll have to do a cross post on this one
